Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Chant Downloads

These classic Indian chants are recited by Dana Rae Paré. Each comes in two formats: First a call and response format that helps you learn the chant line by line, then the complete chant to enable you to chant along with Dana at the correct meter. Use the Print prompt to download and print pdf copies of each chant.

In the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Tradition there is a chant at the beginning (the Invocation) and at the end (Closing) of each practice.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Invocation

Ashtanga Vinyasa Invocation

Print Invocation Chant The invocation sets the tone for the practice by thanking all of the teachers that have kept yoga alive over the past 4000 years and made it available for us to experience today. The first half of the chant comes from Adi Shankaracharya’s renowned masterpiece, Yoga Taravali, which explains the role of the yoga teacher as leading the student from darkness to light – and how to destroy the poisons of existence to reveal the truth. The second half of the chant is taken from the Prayer to Patanjali which is performed each time Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are recited and honors his contribution in continuing the traditions of yoga.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Closing Chant

Ashtanga Vinyasa Closing Chant

Print Closing Chant The closing chant is the Mangala Mantra from the Rig Veda. It dedicates the energy of the practice to the benefit of everyone in the world: “May all be well with mankind. May the leaders of the earth protect in every way by keeping to the right path. May there be goodness for those who know the earth to be sacred. May all beings everywhere be happy and free”.
Om Asatoma Satgamaya Chant

Om Asatoma Satgamaya Chant

Print Om Asatoma Chant Although this is not strictly a traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa chant, this chant taken from The Upanishads, is complementary to the ashtanga philosophy and combines elements from both the invocation and closing chants. “Take us from the false to the truth, from darkness to light, from poison to nectar”.
